Government funding secured for groundbreaking veteran support hub in Dover District

Dover District Council is welcoming nearly £900,000 in Government funding to help transform support for the Armed Forces community across the district.

The Office for Veterans' Affairs, part of the Ministry of Defence, has confirmed funding of £896,353 to support the development of a new VALOUR-recognised centre in Dover District.

The funding, part of the national VALOUR programme, will help create a dedicated centre where veterans and their families can access face-to-face advice, guidance and support in one place.

The centre is to act as a central point of contact for members of the Armed Forces community, connecting people with services such as housing support, health and wellbeing advice, employment and training opportunities, financial guidance, and assistance with accessing veteran services. The aim is to make it easier for people to find the help they need, when they need it.

Further details about the hub, including its location and the range of services available, will be confirmed in due course.  A report confirming details will be presented to DDC’s Cabinet in the coming months.

The VALOUR-recognised centre development funding was secured by Dover District Council working closely with local partners and comes as communities across the district prepare to mark Remembrance Sunday and Remembrance Day.

VALOUR is a UK-wide veterans' support system designed to improve access to the right help and services for veterans and their families. The latest funding round saw 21 organisations across the country awarded support, helping to expand the growing network of VALOUR-recognised centres nationwide.

The announcement builds on DDC's ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, a voluntary pledge of mutual support between a civilian community and its local armed forces community.

Cllr Kevin Mills, Leader of Dover District Council, said: "We are delighted to secure this significant investment for Dover District and to launch a groundbreaking veteran support hub for our community. This funding will provide important and lasting benefits for the area and reinforces our commitment to working alongside partners to ensure members of the Armed Forces community can access the support they need.”
